a bit about us…
VAMP was created in 2025, by Jessica Hickman and Pedro M. Almeida-Siqueira, who came together over their shared love of mask and puppetry. Their goal is to create a hub where puppetry and mask artists can gather, collaborate, and share knowledge. The long-term goal for VAMP is to offer an international puppetry festival on Vancouver Island.
Jessica Hickman
Over the past twenty years, Jessica’s career has morphed and re-morphed many times over. She initially worked as a choreographer, then her path led north where she co-founded and ran Open Pit Theatre for 15 years. Devising, producing, and creating original shows provided her the opportunity to tour her work across Canada and abroad …with notable visits to Festival de Casteliers in Montreal, Festival of Animated Objects in Calgary, and World EXPO in Japan.
When not performing as a puppeteer or physical theatre artist, she was teaching at the Canadian College of Performing Arts where she mentored students in career management, devising, and prop making. If that wasn’t enough, she has also worked as a crowd director, intimacy director, and musical-theatre director on multiple large-scale productions. Over the past five years, her passion for tinkering, illustration, and mixed-media arts led her to start designing and building puppets and props. And now her days are filled with puppet commissions, launching a new company (VAMP!), and fostering a community of animated artists here on the island. Cheers to another 20 years of creating art!
