moving the MASK
A two-day intensive in mask performance and physical theatre.
Dates: February 21 & 22
-
Moving the Mask is a practical, studio-based workshop focused on mask as a tool for physical expression and dramatic composition.
Participants will work with hand-made masks and physical theatre techniques to develop clarity, precision, and play in performance. The work moves between structure and improvisation, emphasizing embodiment rather than psychological interpretation.
-
Over two days, participants will explore:
Mask making and material awareness
Body preparation and physical readiness
Physical theatre techniques
Play, improvisation, and ensemble awareness
Volumes, shapes, and colour in movement
The mask as a dramatic device
The focus is on doing: observing, responding, and refining physical choices in relation to the mask.
-
This workshop is suited for:
Actors and theatre-makers
Physical theatre and movement practitioners
Dancers interested in theatrical composition
Artists curious about mask performance
No prior mask experience is required, but participants should be comfortable working physically and collaboratively.
-
Working with masks removes habitual facial expression and invites the body to communicate more clearly.
Masks demand:
Precision
Commitment
Presence
They reveal how movement, rhythm, and spatial choices create meaning on stage. This workshop uses mask not as a style, but as a training and compositional tool.
