Calling all puppeteers, mask performers, makers, storytellers, and Halloween weirdos! Can you craft a five-minute-or-less performance in just 48hrs? Join the 48-hour Puppet & Mask Challenge to find out!
How will the event work?
Challenge contenders will gather on Friday, October 23, where they will receive a ridiculous prompt and then have 48 hours to create a short piece to share at the Cabaret on Sunday, October 25. You can work alone, in pairs, or in a group, and contenders will use/make their own puppets or masks.
Challenge parameters:
Piece must be performed live (sorry, no film this round)
No longer than 5 minutes in duration
Must use at least one puppet or mask
Must integrate the challenge prompt
Participants must be available for both the Contender Gathering and the Cabaret
Location: The Shire Arts Hub (Esquimalt Industrial Area)
When:
Contender Gathering: Friday, Oct 23rd: 7 - 8:30pm
Cabaret: Sunday, Oct 25th: 7 - 9:30pm
Participants are encouraged to explore something new, play around, expand, fail, and hopefully discover something along the way. This is an incubator to flex our puppet and mask bodies, and force ourselves to get up on our feet. Nothing needs to be refined, it can be messy, under-rehearsed, weird, wacky….or improvised in the moment!
The Cabaret will be a casual, event that is open to the public (adults only). Tickets will be pay-what-you-can as a fundraiser for VAMP, and there will be a simple concession (no alcohol). Contenders will have free entry to the event, and all other guests will require a ticket. Unfortunately, the venue is not accessible to wheelchairs, as there is a flight of stairs.
The 48-hour Mask & Puppet Challenge is an initiative from VAMP to build our community and connect other lovers of the art form.
